I appreciate this very thoughtful insight. I cannot agree more that some of the messages in this book are extremely harmful to those families who have loved ones struggling with schizophrenia. Possibly deadly.

I asked myself the same question, has the author spent time with those afflicted with this mental disorder? Has he walked with the families desperate to find medical solutions for their child who has a serious mental illness? Wouldn’t we want the answer to be so simplistic as sleep?

Our daughter would not be alive if we hadn’t educated ourselves on schizophrenia and sought medical/professional answers from those who are experts in this field. Looking back, we can see she was deteriorating for years and I was blind to the reality of the seriousness of this illness even thinking it might be a spiritual problem. Does the enemy use this illness against her? Yes. Is it more than a spiritual problem? Also a resounding yes! Is this a real physical phenomenon beyond her control? Yes!

I praise God that she was found alive after walking the streets for weeks. She was living in an alternate reality beyond her control. This was so much more than lack of sleep.

The damage to her brain has been severe, but thankfully we see improvements due to medical intervention.

I am a believer and a biblical counselor who wants to stand for the vulnerable against this misinformation and harmful messaging.

Thank you for sharing! Knowing we have a community of faith based families who stand together is a life line for those of us who live in the reality of schizophrenia. No one wants it to be a “unicorn” more than those who live it— but it is very real. God is faithful— we cling to Him!

I just met with a dear friend who shares a similar story. These men don’t get it and are doing harm. If you ever write on this subject, I’m happy to share and support. I’m so sorry for what you walked through with your daughter. It’s incredible how many families share similar journeys. Please keep speaking up!!

She articulates the case for the reality of serious mental illness very well. I truly hope ACBC re-evaluates for the sake of the least of these and how the church ought to see us.
